    Remembering Kurt Cobain

    by Dada VJ (04/08/2009 - 19:21)

Hard to believe it's been 15 years since Kurt Cobain was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Millions of fans around the world grieved the Nirvana frontman - the father of grunge music and Generation X's spokesman (all labels he hated) - when his body was discovered in Seattle on April 8, 1994.

When Nirvana burst onto the scene in the late 1980s/early 1990s, a shift in music was instantly born. The cheesy pop and hip-hop groups (think Milli Vanilli) and heavy metal hair bands had long ruled what was becoming a tired and uninspired music scene. Nirvana (Cobain along with Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl) was something we had never heard before. They were the first band out of Seattle's growing grunge rock scene to make a big impact on the national scene.

After their debut album, 1989's Bleach, became an underground hit, Nirvana signed with a major record company. 1991's Nevermind went on to sell more than 10 million copies with the single "Smells Like Teen Spirit" becoming an anthem for Generation X. Nirvana was suddenly the biggest band in the world and Cobain was the king. However, he was never comfortable with commercial success and global fame and, also suffering from a heroin addiction that he repeatedly tried to kick without success, decided to end his life by committing suicide on April 5, 1994. His body was found in Seattle three days later.

A true musical genius. Very rare. RIP Kurt.

Digital Music Sales Way Up Last Year!

    by Dada VJ (01/05/2009 - 20:54)

You probably already know this - since you love buying your music at Dada.net - but online sales of music were at an all-time high last year!

Billboard magazine is reporting that over 1.5 billion units of music (albums, singles, music videos and digital tracks) were sold in 2008 - that's up 10.5% over 2007! Digital tracks by themselves sold over one billion units - a 27% gain over last year - while digital albums grew 32% to 65.8 million units.

So, what were music fans like you downloading? Over here at Dada.net, the three biggest tracks of 2008 were "Bleeding Love" by Leona Lewis (pictured left), "I Kissed A Girl" by Katy Perry and Lil Wayne's "Lollipop."

Across the board, Billboard reports that "Bleeding Love" was also the year's biggest digital song with 3.4 million paid downloads while Rihanna was 2008's top digital track selling artist. (Rihanna also had Dada.net's 10th most popular download of the year with "Disturbia").

Lil Wayne also had a huge year. He scored 2008's biggest selling album with Tha Carter III and his "Lollipop," in addition to being the third most popular song at Dada.net, was the year's biggest ringtone.

Best of 2008: #1 Leona Lewis's "Bleeding Love"

    by Dada VJ (12/31/2008 - 15:51)

Leona Lewis's breakthrough hit "Bleeding Love" (Syco/J Records) was the most popular song at Dada.net in 2008.

"Bleeding Love" was the first number one single for the British songstress and X Factor winner, reaching the top spot in the U.S. and U.K.

Lewis followed up her huge hit with the top 10 "Better In Time."

    Best of 2008: #2 Katy Perry's "I Kissed A Girl"

    by Dada VJ (12/30/2008 - 16:17)

Katy Perry made everyone sit up and listen to her single "I Kissed A Girl," Dada.net's second most popular song of 2008.

The risque lyrics to "I Kissed A Girl" made the song an instant hit, topping the chart in 20 countries including the U.S. "I Kissed A Girl" catapulted sales of Perry's debut album One of the Boys (Capitol/EMI) to platinum. The album's follow-up single "Hot N Cold" was also a huge hit at the end of 2008.

Her songs have been heard in MTV's The Hills, Self-Inflicted and Thinking of You, Oxygen's Fight Girls, Fingerprints and the film The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. "I Kissed A Girl" was also featured on the popular NOW 10th Anniversary collection, available exclusively for download at Dada.net.

    Best of 2008: #3 Lil Wayne's "Lollipop"

    by Dada VJ (12/29/2008 - 16:06)

    Lil Wayne
had the third most popular song of 2008 at Dada.net with "Lollipop," his first number one single on the Billboard Hot 100.

Born Dwayne Michael Carter Jr., the rapper joined the Cash Money Records collective while just a teenager. In 1997, he formed the group Hot Boys along with rappers Juvenile, Turk and B.G. and they released their debut Get It How You Live that same year. Hot Boys followed up their debut with two more releases before Lil Wayne launched his solo career in 1999. His first three CDs were met with little success until the 2004 release, Tha Carter, and a featured spot on Destiny Child's "Soldier" turned his career around.

The next couple of years were nonstop. Tha Carter II followed in 2005. In 2006, Lil Wayne collaborated with rapper Birdman for the album“Like Father, Like Son. He later featured on Fat Joe's single "Make it Rain" that year. In 2007, he also appeared on the R&B single "You" by singer Lloyd.

Tha Carter III was released in 2008 and brought Lil Wayne to a level of commercial success he had never had before. "Lollipop" was the album's first single - and it put Lil Wayne on top of the Billboard charts for the first time. The song also appeared on the popular hits collection, NOW 10th Anniversary, available exclusively for download at Dada.net.

Best of 2008: #4 Coldplay's "Viva La Vida"

    by Dada VJ (12/22/2008 - 19:23)

Another year, another big album for Coldplay.

The U.K. megaband released Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends (EMI) earlier this year, scoring number one Billboard singles with "Violet Hill" and "Viva La Vida."

"Viva La Vida" is Dada.net's fourth most popular song of 2008.

Since forming in London 10 years, ago, the alternative rock band has sold 40 million albums worldwide. They are known for their hit singles "Yellow," "The Scientist," "Speed of Sound" and "Clocks." Coldplay's early material was compared to acts such as Radiohead, Jeff Buckley, U2 and Travis but with Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends, they have firmly est
ablished a place all their own

    Best of 2008: #5 M.I.A.'s "Paper Planes"

    by Dada VJ (12/22/2008 - 17:47)

M.I.A. has Dada.net's fifth song on the Best of 2008 with "Paper Planes," the latest single from the singer who crosses many genres and who is not afraid to confront social issues through her music.

The singer known as M.I.A. was born Maya Arulpragasam in Sri Lanka amid major political strife before moving to England as a teenager and later pursuing a music career. Her debut album, 2005's Arular, was a huge critical success and put her on the charts at home and in the U.S. with the singles "Sunshowers" and "Galang."

Her second album, Kala, followed in 2007.

    Best of 2008: #6 Ne-Yo's "Closer"

    by Dada VJ (12/22/2008 - 17:37)

2008 was The Year of Ne-Yo.

The R&B star released his third album, The Year of the Gentleman (Island Def Jam), and had two hit singles by the end of the year, "Miss Independent" and "Closer," Dada.net's sixth most popular song of 2008.

2009 is sure to be another great year for Ne-Yo. Gentlemen's third single, Mad, is currently rising the charts and he has several acting projects in the works.

Best of 2008: #7 Sara Bareilles's "Love Song"

    by Dada VJ (12/22/2008 - 17:18)

Dada.net's seventh most popular song of 2008 is the breakout single from Sara Bareilles, "Love Song."

"Love Song" was the first single from the singer/songwriter/pianist's sophomore album, Little Voices (Epic Records). The song actually entered the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 in late 2007 but was a chart staple for months to come. Bareilles embarked on a nationwide tour and appeared on many television talk shows to promote the song. A follow-up, "Bottle It Up" was released in mid-2008.

    Best of 2008: #8 P!nk's "So What"

    by Dada VJ (12/22/2008 - 17:07)

Fresh off a divorce, P!nk released Funhouse (LaFace/Jive) and poked fun at all the nosy tabloids up in her bidness with "So What," Dada.net's eighth most popular song of 2008.

"So What" was a fresh and funny look at the newly-divorced and always gutsy P!nk, who rose to fame in 2000 with the release of her first album, Can't Take Me Home (LaFace/Arista). Throughout the decades, the singer born Alecia Moore has been a mainstay in the top 10 with singles like "Get This Party Started," "Who Knew," "Just Like a Pill," "Don't Let Me Get Me," and "Most Girls."

Funhouse is P!nk's fourth album and also features the new single "Sober." Watch for it on Dada.net's Best of 2009 list.

Produced by Timbaland, OneRepublic introduced longtime songwriter Ryan Tedder to mass audiences as the face and voice of OneRepublic. "Apologize" was a huge number one hit in early 2008 and was followed by "Stop and Stare," proving the act was no one-hit wonder and Timbaland had another platinum project on his hands.

    by Dada VJ (12/22/2008 - 16:08)

Following 2007's release of her multplatinum album, Good Girl Gone Bad (Island Def Jam) and a slew of big singles include "Umbrella," "Hate That I Love You," "Shut Up and Drive," "Take A Bow" and "Don't Stop The Music," 2008 was another big year for Rihanna. Born Robyn Rihanna Fenty, Rihanna was discovered when music producer Evan Rogers vacationed in Barbados and was introduced to the budding singer. Her music was well-received in the U.S., with singles like "Pon De Replay," "SOS" and "Unfaithful" all making their mark on the Billboard Hot 100. It was Rihanna's 2007 album, Good Girl Gone Bad, that firmly established her with global stars like Beyonce and Britney Spears, garnering several number one singles and two Grammy wins. Rihanna is the second artist - and the first female- from Barbados to ever receive a Grammy.

Best of 2008: #15 Kings of Leon's "Sex on Fire"

    by Dada VJ (12/17/2008 - 16:38)

How's this for a success story? Kings of Leon, whose "Sex on Fire" is Dada.net's 15th most popular song of 2008, have reached greater heights with each new album, taking the band far from their Tennessee roots and making them one of Europe's most popular acts.

Since their debut in 2003, Kings of Leon experienced immediate popularity in the U.K. but it's taken a little longer for music fans stateside to catch on. Though the single "Molly's Chambers" and tours supporting U2 helping break the band early, it wasn't until 2007's Because of the Times that the Kings of Leon started receiving widespread recognition in the U.S. The album debuted at number 25 on the Billboard charts and also topped the charts in several countries. 2008's Only By The Night, debuted at number four in the U.S. and number one in the U.K., sealing the band's status as one of the decade's coolest bands.

These Tennessee rockers are just beginning their global domination.

The 17th most popular song of 2008 at Dada.net belongs to Keyshia Cole's "Heaven Sent," the first single off of her new album, A Different Me (A&M/Interscope).

Keyshia Cole's first album, 2005's The Way It Is, spawned several hit singles (including the top 10s  "Love" and "The Way It Is") but it was her guest appearance on Diddy's "Last Night" and R. Keyshia Cole was now a household name.

"Heaven Sent" reached the top 30 of the Billboard Hot 100.
